Effects of Noise on People

Effects on Learning

FICAN conducted a pilot study on the relationship between aircraft noise reduction in schools and standardized test scores.  The results suggest that there is a strong relationship between noise reduction in schools and reduced failure rates (i.e., improvement) as measured by state mandated test scores, at the high school level.  A summary of the study is provided here:

  • FICAN Report on Relationship between Aircraft Noise Reduction in Schools and Standardized Test Scores, Eagan et al March 2004 (Handout, Presentation)  250 k, 1.7 mb

The European Union has recently published findings of its Road Traffic & Aircraft Noise & Children's Cognition & Health Study, which suggests a relationship between high aircraft noise levels and reduced academic performance.
